Local Businesses Support Oswego Reads and Greg Mortenson Event

Oswego, NY – Oswego Reads and the upcoming Greg Mortenson event have garnered considerable support from local businesses, according to Laura Ryder, Oswego Reads Committee Chair and Director of Literacy in the Oswego City School District.

“We’re so appreciative of the support and outreach we have received from the business community for Oswego Reads and our upcoming Greg Mortenson event,” said Ryder. “The partnerships have truly made this initial idea a reality.”

Mortenson will be speaking at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center on October 28th at 7 p.m. as part of the community’s Oswego Reads collaborative. His first book, “Three Cups of Tea,” is the selected book for Oswego’s first community-wide read initiated by Oswego Reads.  General admission tickets are $20 per person and available at www.oswegoreads.com.

Mortenson, a nurse and mountain climber turned advocate for peace and education, has established more than 131 schools in rural and often volatile and dangerous regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.  These schools provide education to more than 58,000 children, including 48,000 girls where few education opportunities existed before.  Mortenson believes that global education is the key to global peace, and he has been working on that concept for nearly two decades, one school at a time.

According to Ryder, Pathfinder Bank is the major sponsor of the event.

“Pathfinder Bank stepped up right from beginning and said they wanted to be a part of this effort,” said Ryder. “Their level of support for Oswego Reads has been considerable, and their continued advocacy is something this community benefits greatly from.” “We can not thank Pathfinder Bank enough for their help with this program,” she added.

Other local businesses/organizations that have played a significant role in the planning and execution of the Oswego Reads and Mortenson efforts are the Oswego City School District, SUNY Oswego, the river’s end bookstore, Step One Creative, Mitchell’s Speedway Press, The Palladium Times, WRVO and C’s Market.

“Oswego Reads is very thankful for the collective support of these local businesses,” said Ryder.  “Without the support of these area businesses, the opportunity to welcome Greg to our community may not have happened.”

Ryder also praised the efforts of a volunteer committee that came together and helped form the Oswego Reads initiative. The volunteers were made up of community members, Oswego City School District educators and staff, SUNY Oswego representatives, and others from throughout the area.

“The Oswego Reads committee was truly committed to this year-long effort of planning,” said Ryder. “We’re very grateful to everyone who had a hand in making this a success, and it was individual efforts that helped the team make this all happen.”
