Local Support Helps Bring ‘Teacher Who Couldn’t Read’ To Celebrate Literacy Volunteers’ 25th Anniversary

OSWEGO, NY – “Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County (LVOC) is proud to announce the many sponsors who have made it possible for author John Corcoran to come to Oswego to help LVOC celebrate 25 years of serving Oswego County,” said Jane Murphy, LVOC executive director. Sponsors of this event include SUNY Oswego, Rotary District 7150, Oswego Noontime Rotary Club, Fulton Noontime Rotary Club, Fulton Sunrise Rotary Club, and Fulton Teachers Association. “The tremendous support of community members is priceless,” said Murphy, “We are very fortunate to have John Corcoran, a nationally renowned author and literacy advocate, as the speaker at our 25th Anniversary Celebration. He is a true inspiration about the power of literacy.”

Corcoran graduated from college, was a high school teacher for seventeen years, and developed over $50 million in real estate, all while masking his inability to read. Corcoran is the author of “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read” and “The Bridge to Literacy,” as well as the founder of the John Corcoran Foundation, whose goal is to raise awareness about the importance of literacy.

The John Corcoran Foundation believes that “it is as important to teach an adult how to read as it is to teach a child how to read,” and that “the key to teaching everyone to read, write, comprehend, and spell is proper instruction.” By sharing his story, Corcoran hopes to spread the message that “it is never too late to learn how to read.”

LVOC’s special 25th Anniversary Celebration will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the American Foundry, Oswego. Tickets are $50 per person and include dinner. Corcoran will be autographing books at the event. There will be a book signing at 4:30 p.m. at the rivers end bookstore.
