On Saturday, October 2nd, employees from Lowe’s in Oswego will roll up their sleeves and construct a ramp at the Wilcox home 2333 County Route 176 in Fulton. The ramp build will start at 9:00 a.m. at the home that is located right across from the Oswego County Airport.
Lowe’s has chosen this ramp build as one of their Heroes projects. Troy Fowler, Manager of Lowe’s in Oswego, proposed this particular project and received corporate approval to donate the materials for the ramp.
When her sister Mary became unable to live alone due to illness, Carol Wilcox was happy to welcome her sister into her home. The problem, though, is that the only way to enter or exit Carol’s home is by climbing stairs. Mary’s illness makes it impossible for her to walk up or down stairs.
“I didn’t know what I was going to do,†says Carol. “Then someone suggested that I call ARISE. I called, and I’m so glad that I did! Not only will this help my sister, who cannot manage the stairs at all, but it will help my mother-in-law who is ill and also lives with us.†Carol said that she hopes that others will learn more about how to support ARISE’s programs and to access their services. “I am so grateful to Lowe’s for doing this. It would be great if others got involved, too. I had no idea that ARISE helps people in so many ways.â€
Stairs can turn a home into a prison for people with disabilities. For the past several years, the Oswego Office of ARISE has coordinated the Ramp Program to make it possible for people with disabilities to stay in their homes.
This year ARISE and partners have constructed 10 ramps in Oswego County and plan to do 5-6 more before winter.

ARISE Child and Family Service, Inc. (ARISE) was formed in 1979 to provide advocacy and services for individuals with disabilities. ARISE is an Independent Living Center: a non-profit, community-based organization run by and for people who have disabilities.
