MEXICO – The Mexico Academy & Central School District’s Learn to Swim program has made a splash with hundreds of participants this summer.

From June 5 through Aug. 18, 500 eager swimmers will have attended one or more of the two-week sessions, which take place for 45 minutes Mondays to Fridays.
Night classes are offered at Tuesdays and Thursdays or Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
All classes take place in the pool at Mexico High School.
The renowned program has attracted several families from the greater Mexico community, Oswego and Jefferson counties and even the state of Ohio.
Coordinated by MACS physical education teacher Lindsay Rodas, Learn to Swim has utilized several Mexico High School Swimming and Diving team members and other supporters to teach children from six months of age up to adults various swimming skills, water safety, use of swimmer aids and knowing when to call 911 in emergency situations.
“It’s about knowing your surroundings,” Rodas said.
She said it’s never too early to teach children about safety.
To help reinforce that message – including land and water safety – the Learn to Swim program recently welcomed Oswego County Sheriff’s Deputy Kristy Crast.
Deputy Crast discussed with the swim students how to keep themselves safe, to follow rules, tell an adult if they get hurt and to not be afraid around law enforcement officers because they are there to help.
Rodas organized several guest speakers throughout the duration of the program as a means of added information and a connection to the community.
