Richland, NY – The Men’s Breakfast Group of Vorea Community Church in Richland, NY, has packed two special fishing theme boxes as part of their annual Operation Christmas Child (OCC) outreach mission. The boxes are packed full with a collapsible fishing rod, line, lures, bobbers, ball cap, line clipper, sunglasses, flashlight and batteries, a stuffed animal toy, and candy.

“Once we heard there was a need for gifts for older boys, one of the guys said ‘How about sending over some fishing gear,’” explains Jim Jackson, a volunteer with Operation Christmas Child’s New York North Central Area Team. “Our breakfast host encourages us to donate to OCC.”

The men’s group provided funds to pack and pay the $7 shipping for 22 boxes, says Jim’s wife Nancy Jackson, also a volunteer with the OCC team that collects boxes in Oswego, Oneida, Herkimer, Lewis and Jefferson counties. The shoe boxes include school supplies, hygiene items and small toys.

The two fishing theme boxes were a special effort for the Vorea men’s group this year. Most of the items were purchased from Pulaski area stores.

“Donating to this project instead of paying for our breakfast has been a great way to encourage men to be a part of Operation Christmas Child,” Jim says.

Jim and Nancy have traveled with OCC NYNC team members to the OCC processing center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the boxes are prepared for overseas shipment. The shoe box gifts are sent to children in need in areas oppressed by war, poverty or disaster in more than 100 countries.

The children receiving the boxes have never received an Operation Christmas Child gift before. Each box is delivered with a pamphlet about Jesus as “The Greatest Gift of All” in the local language.

The Vorea Community Church at 12 Waggoner Road, Richland, will be accepting shoe box gift dropoffs from individuals and groups Monday November 14: 2-4pm, Tuesday, November 15: 6-8pm, Wednesday, November 16: 10am-12noon, Thursday, November 17: 6-8pm; Friday, November 18: 11am-4pm, Saturday, November 19: 9am-6pm, Sunday, November 20: 12-2pm, and Monday, November 21: 8-10am.

Other collection sites in Oswego County include Lamson Road Community Church in Phoenix and Southwest Oswego United Methodist Church in Oswego.

Operation Christmas Child is outreach mission of the Samaritan’s Purse ministry led by Dr. Billy Graham’s son Franklin Graham (www.samaritanspurse.org/occ).
