OSWEGO COUNTY – It’s all about the lights! In every holiday tradition, be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or any other celebration that takes place around the winter solstice, lights play a major role.

Symbolically breaking the darkness restores our belief that the cold season will not last forever, and that the darkness of the world will never win out against the power of goodness and light.

Every December, as the days counting down to Christmas slowly passed by in the mind of a child, my parents would load my brother and myself into the trusty Ford station wagon and we would take a little drive around my hometown to see the Christmas lights.

I can remember being fascinated with color and light, even as a small child, so maybe it should be no surprise that I became an artist and photographer as an adult. I still love to observe the displays of vibrant, glowing colors that appear each holiday season, as the darkest time of the year is brightened with every imaginable hue of electric illumination.

This year I decided to travel around Oswego County and capture a few vignettes of the holiday displays that remind us of our childhood and also serve to make our adult lives a little brighter. I barely felt the cold as I produced this gallery, as the warmth of the glowing displays and the goodwill that they exude distracted me from any uncomfortable weather.

I hope these images brighten your holiday season, and perhaps serve as a reminder that, despite the many inconveniences and disappointments brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic, some things, like the warm glow of holiday lights, remain constant and reliable in our lives.
