More Than 200 Students Brave Storm To Attend Training, Careers Expo

OSWEGO – Despite harsh weather and pending school closings, more than 220 juniors and seniors from Oswego County high schools and their teachers attended this year’s Training and Careers Expo at the Swetman Gym on the SUNY Oswego campus March 14.

In addition, more than 35 area employers and training providers shared job and training guidance through information and interactive displays.

“The goal of the expo has always been to provide students access to good-paying, local career options,” said Chad Whelsky, associate director of the SUNY Oswego Office of Business and Community Relations and a member of the planning committee. “In addition to previous employers who represented industries like manufacturing, energy, healthcare and the skilled trades, we were especially excited this year to include several new employers from a variety of businesses, including trucking, banking and social services.”

Local education providers also provided information on training opportunities from apprenticeships to associate degree programs.

Staff from the SUNY Oswego Office of Career Services assisted students with job preparation skills – such as interviewing, resume and cover letters and the skills needed to keep a job.

Men’s Warehouse employees even helped students learn to prepare for a professional interview by teaching them how to tie a tie.

The event was organized by staff from the SUNY Oswego Office of Business and Community Relations, Oswego County Workforce NY, CiTi, the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and the Phoenix Central School District.

The fourth annual Training and Careers Expo was made possible through the generous support of several sponsors including Exelon Generation, SUNY Oswego, Central & Northern New York Building and Construction Trades Council, Workforce Development Board of Oswego County, Oswego Wal-Mart Supercenter, Oswego County Counselors Association, and Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 73.
