Carl S. Young Advocacy Award honors Carl Young, past president of LeadingAge New York, for his enduring, passionate advocacy for the aging.

It is given to an active LeadingAge New York member who has demonstrated exceptional advocacy and leadership on behalf of aging services, commitment to advancing the association’s legislative goals and actively encourages others to advocate for the elderly.

Young presented Murray the award during a special awards luncheon held during the LeadingAge NY Annual Conference and Exposition in Saratoga Springs.

Murray, a Licensed Social Worker, joined St. Luke Health Services as Director of Social Services in 1995.

In 2000, Murray was appointed Director of Bishop’s Commons Enriched Housing Residence.

Most recently, Murray was promoted to executive director, overseeing operations at both Bishop’s Commons and St. Francis Commons Assisted Living Residence, a position she has held since 2013.

In accepting the award, Murray observed, “The world of long term care with its various service lines is complicated. We continually live in an uncertain space – regulations, unfunded mandates, surveillance, reimbursement, workforce and many other challenges that are at times exhausting. But when I see the faces of the people we serve – the challenges fade and I remember that the dignity of our frail or elderly is always worth advocating for.”

Terrence Gorman, chief executive officer of the St. Luke organization noted that there is none more deserving of this statewide recognition than Murray.

“Karen is a pleasure to work with and her colleagues find great inspiration in her dedication and professionalism. We as an organization, and to a greater extent we as a community are fortunate to have the benefit of her compassionate leadership when advancing the interests of the aging or frail,” he said.

LeadingAge New York is the only statewide organization representing the entire continuum of not-for-profit, mission-driven, and public continuing care, including senior housing, nursing home, adult care facility, continuing care retirement community, assisted living, home care, adult day care and community services providers.

LeadingAge New York represents over 600 organizations dedicated to expanding the world of possibilities for aging. Together, we advance policies, promote practices and conduct research that supports, enables and empowers people to live fully as they age.
