Two students in the Oswego County BOCES New Vision Allied Health Oswego class recently had the experience of a lifetime when they were on hand for the caesarian-section birth at Oswego Hospital. The students, Whitney Gayne and Shelby Rusaw, both of Mexico were very excited to be able to be in the operating room during the procedure. “It was great,” said Rusaw, “we were right there next to the doctor.” Both felt they were prepared for the procedure, but said the actual experience was way beyond what they expected. The sights, sounds and even the smell of the operating room were almost overwhelming, but both agreed they would do it again in a second.
The Oswego County BOCES New Vision program classroom is located in Oswego Hospital and allows students to be completely immersed in the medical field. The students spend three days per week in rotations and two days in classroom instruction. For students who have an interest in medical studies, the program has proven invaluable. Gayne’s and Rusaw’s experiences through New Vision Allied Health have cemented their commitment to pursuing a medical career, but they have not yet decided which area of the field they will focus on.
