OSWEGO — Syracuse Rotarian, author, and public information specialist Glenn H. Ivers spoke at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Oswego held at Bishop’s Commons. He spoke briefly about his recent book, Angels of Bastogne, and then turned his attention to the Book Club project of his Syracuse Rotary Club.
Ivers is an English literature graduate of Colgate University and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Liberia, 1974-1976. Over the intervening years he has been involved with Friends of Liberia, the InterAction Commission on the Advancement of Women, United Nations Association, and National Peace Corps Association. He has served as special projects coordinator of the Easter Seal Society of Syracuse, assistant executive director of Syracuse Boys Club, and director of public information and education of Laubach Literacy International since 1985.
The Book Club project of the Syracuse Rotary Club, under Ivers’ leadership, involves a selection of six books that are relevant to the Central New York region and subjects compatible with the goals of Rotary. Anyone can sign up online by inquiring at [email protected] and all 1½ hour discussions are conducted with Zoom.
One of this year’s books was Haven by Ruth Gruber, the story of 982 Jewish and Christian refugees from Europe during World War II who found sanctuary in Oswego in 1944. That discussion led the group to decide to make a field trip to Oswego on June 30 to visit the Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum, have dinner, and attend the Syracuse orchestra summer concert at Fort Ontario.
According to the author, Angels of Bastogne is based on the true story of a US Army doctor and two heroic Belgian nurses who volunteered in his aid station in Bastogne, Belgium that was bombed on Christmas Eve, 1944. It is also the story of soldiers and civilians swept up in the struggle for control of the strategic town during the Battle of the Bulge, and of the veterans who reunited in Bastogne,50 years later to reminisce and remember fallen comrades.
Anyone interested in becoming a Rotarian or in learning more about Rotary’s humanitarian work around the world and in the community is invited to attend a meeting of the Oswego Rotary Club any Tuesday at noon at Bishop’s Commons. The building is fully accessible with convenient parking. Visiting Rotarians and guests are welcome and may reserve lunch by contacting [email protected].
