OSWEGO, NY – Well known for welcoming visitors to the city of Oswego, the O’Mara Tourist Center would like to open its doors to area youth who would like to experience some of the history that the center has to offer.
The center is housed in a newly refurbished turn-of-century, one-room schoolhouse.
Complete with desks and period décor, the center provides visitors with the opportunity to step back in time and experience the feel of being in a one-room schoolhouse.
“The O’Mara Center is a wonderful resource and we encourage local scout troops and other summer children’s programs to bring a lunch, enjoy a picnic in the historic surroundings of the center, and learn what is was like to operate and attend a one-room school house,†said Executive Director of the Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce Beth Hilton.
Operating under the auspices of the chamber, the O’Mara Tourist Center is located in a newly refurbished one-room schoolhouse reminiscent of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The chamber works with the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) through the SUNY Oswego Office of Business & Community Relations to make the tourist center available each season.
The O’Mara Tourist Center is open seven days a week from May through September.
RSVP volunteers greet visitors, offer literature on various attractions and points of interest and help sustain Oswego County’s $166 million tourism industry.
To help beautify the location, Amy Pelow of the Oswego Garden Club and local Girl Scouts tended to the center’s gardens this spring, while SUNY Oswego maintains the grounds at the center.
