MEXICO, NY – Oswego County BOCES Adult Education student Craig Korthas was recently recognized with a Student Achievement Award for his outstanding performance and dedication in the Heavy Equipment Operation and Commercial Driving License Program.
Upon completion of the CDL-B course, he attained a perfect score on his NYS Department of Motor Vehicles road test, which is an achievement that very few drivers ever achieve.
His instructor, Ken Koegel, is very proud of Craig’s achievement, adding, “When our students score so highly, especially by DMV standards, it directly reflects our commitment to excellence when it comes to teaching these courses. It demonstrates to employers and the community that we produce skilled and knowledgeable students that will be assets to their trade.â€Â
The Adult Education department has seen a surge in enrollment throughout their fall and winter sessions, as they continue to expand their programs to accommodate the ever changing demands in technology and trade skills.
Many students are able to attend classes for little or no cost due to the variety of funding options available from agencies such as the NYS Department of Employment and Training, Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities and the newly expanded Veteran’s Affairs funding from the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
In response to the tough job market that students currently face, many Adult Education programs also include internships, clinical externships, job placement and pre-hiring opportunities.
Werner Enterprises, US Express and Stevens Transport are among the growing list of CDL program affiliates that are offering pre-hire opportunities to students in the CDL program.
All past and current students are encouraged to attend the two informational meetings coming up at Oswego County BOCES.
On Dec. 2 at 3 p.m., Werner Enterprises will be visiting the school to offer pre-hire opportunities to qualified students.
On Dec. 9, representatives from the Empire State Highway Contractors Association, who hire for 35 different contractors throughout NYS, will be on hand to talk to students and individuals about job opportunities.
There will be two sessions held. The first begins at 9 a.m. and the second at 12:30 p.m.
Applications are now being accepted for both the winter CDL session that starts in January and the spring HEO program coming up April.
