OCO Clubhouse to host Community Event Concerning Problem Gambling

OSWEGO – Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) Clubhouse will host a community event regarding problem gambling on August 20th from 4:30 to 8:15 p.m. at the McCrobie Civic Center, 41 Lake Street, Oswego. The event aims to raise awareness about problem gambling, and to celebrate recovery in all of its many forms.

Over a dozen community organizations will be in attendance to spread awareness and present their information. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a training course, known as Recovery 101, which will be led by Chelsea Kehrli – RCP, CRPA, CARC. Supplies will be on hand to construct 100 harm reduction kits which will be available for distribution during the event. A lite meal will also be served for those in attendance.

The highlight of the event will a presentation by guest speaker Saul Malek at 6:30 p.m. “Saul is a twenty-six-year-old Dallas based speaker who focuses on self-acceptance, resilience, positive decision making, and gambling harm prevention,” said OCO Clubhouse Site Supervisor Jason Fredette. “Having developed a gambling addiction as a college sophomore, Saul lost money, time, relationships, and nearly his life. Since finding recovery in 2019, he has made it his mission to help others cope with life, find purpose, and keep away from maladaptive behaviors such as compulsive gambling.”

Oswego County Opportunities Clubhouse is dedicated to providing support and resources to individuals and families affected by Substance Use Disorder. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, the organization works to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction in all of its forms and to promote recovery.  This event was made possible by funding from the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, the Central Region Addiction Resource Center, Bridges and Oswego County Opportunities Clubhouse.
