OCO Recognizes Julie Forbes as Volunteer of the Year

FULTON, NY – Oswego County Opportunities recently honored Literacy Volunteers Tutor Julie Forbes with the agency’s prestigious Howard Wilcox Volunteer of the Year Award.

Established in memory of a very special OCO volunteer, the Howard Wilcox Volunteer of the Year Award is presented annually to a volunteer that goes above and beyond in offering their time and talents to an OCO program.

“Since Julie joined Literacy Volunteers in 2011 she has been tutoring adults in reading, writing and math,” said Literacy Volunteers Coordinator Meg Henderson. “Julie, who has never missed a tutoring session with her students, is a patient teacher that assists her students in reaching their goals by tailoring lesson plans to each student’s unique learning style. Additionally, Julie has developed strategies that allow her students to gain the empowerment skills and confidence they need to be successful. She also provides support to her fellow volunteers through her ‘Tutor Talks’ group where tutors learn from each other by sharing their experiences. Julie has proven herself to be a valuable asset to OCO, her students, and our community. Julie is well deserving of this recognition and I am pleased that she is this year’s recipient of OCO’s Howard Wilcox Award.”
