OSWEGO, NY – In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women with limited or no health insurance will have the opportunity to receive free mammograms and breast exams during October courtesy of Oswego County Opportunities’ Cancer Services Program Partnership.
The CSPP is funded by the NYS Department of Health and the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure.
Having annual mammograms is an important part of maintaining good health.
“This is an excellent opportunity for women to learn about their risk and get screened for breast cancer,†said Carolyn Handville, coordinator of OCO’s Cancer Services Program Partnership. “All women 40 and over should have an annual mammogram and clinical breast exam. A mammogram along with a clinical breast exam is an effective tool to detect breast cancer in its early stage and has been successful in reducing overall cancer and mortality.â€
According to the American Cancer Society in 2010, 13 Oswego County residents will be diagnosed with cancer each week and 5 individuals will die from cancer each week.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women in New York State.
“We encourage women to be vigilant, to learn about personal risk and get screened for breast cancer,†added Handville. “Early detection of breast cancer through mammography and clinical breast exams has led to a significant increase in the number of individuals who survive this disease. When caught early, the chance of survival is high.â€
Since early detection is the best protection, representatives from OCO’s Cancer Services Program Partnership will be offering not only free mammograms to those with limited or no health insurance, but also free raffle prizes on the following dates:
Oct. 14, 21, 28 from 1 – 4 p.m. and Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. at Fulton Medical Imaging, Suite 200, 522 S. Fourth St., Fulton.
Oct. 15 from 4 –7 p.m. at the Pulaski Health Center (NOCHSI), 61 Delano St., Pulaski.
Oct. 13 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oswego Hospital, 110 W. Sixth St., Oswego.
