OHS Students Give ‘Gift Of Life’

OSWEGO, NY – “Spirit Week” at the Oswego High School has been a tremendous success with colorful and unique events each and every day.

However, on Wednesday, students stopped their celebrating for a short time to provide a “gift of life” at the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.

At least twice a year Oswego High School students generously donated 82 pints of blood.

School Nurse Team Leader Christina Chamberlain said, “This is a new record for blood donations at the high school and we have been doing this for a long time.”

The bloodmobile is sponsored by the National Honor Society in conjunction with the OHS Health Office.

Chamberlain continued, “Our students really seem to rally around this event. We had National Honor Society members greeting and signing in their fellow students while others volunteered to work in the food canteen to help the donors get nourishment and drink after they gave.”

Students must be at least 17 years of age to donate.

For some, there were nervous looks and anticipation as they were giving for the first time while other older students indicated they donate whenever it is possible.

They all agreed this was a very worthwhile cause and they were glad to participate.

Principal Pete Myles noted, “This is a tremendous community service for our students to give the ‘gift of life’ for others in need. There is a desperate need for blood and I am pleased and proud of the record level of donations given by our students at this blood drive.”
