OSWEGO, NY – Members of the Oswego Chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians laid flowers on the gravesite of The Most Reverend Dean Michael Barry in commemoration of his 180th birthday.
Father Barry was born at Castlelyon, County Cork, Ireland, on Aug. 15, 1831.
He was an active religious leader in the community of Oswego, at St. Paul’s Church for 45 years.
After his death on Oct. 23, 1914, the community of Oswego funded the amazing Celtic cross pictured here at St. Paul’s Cemetery.
The inscription on the monument reads: “As a token of love and esteem of the grateful people for whom he labored so zealously for 45 years. May his soul rest in peace.”
The local Oswego chapter Dean Michael Barry Division 1 at 22 Munn St. is named in his honor.
The Oswego AOH membership continues to grow monthly consisting of nearly 300 full members, Catholic with Irish heritage, and closing in on 200 social members, anyone age 16 on up that is recommended by a member for membership.
Each year the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration at the clubhouse grows in attendance and popularity.
In September the AOH will sponsor its second annual “Half Way to St. Patrick’s Day Party” for the public, and in October its annual clambake.
