OSWEGO, NY – “The men and women serving as members of school boards are dedicated to children, learning and community, and devote many hours of service to elementary and secondary public education as they continually strive for improvement, excellence and progress in education.”
Those were just a few of the positive comments directed to school board members by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo.
During the October 22 Oswego City School District Board of Education meeting District Clerk Bill Foley read the proclamation declaring October 28 – November 1, 2013, as “School Board Recognition Week.”
Foley read, “The members of New York’s local school boards respond to the educational needs of the communities they serve and, in doing so, these leaders help strengthen our state’s educational system and improve future prospects for our children.”
The members of the Oswego Board of Education include President Kathleen Allen, Vice-President Samuel Tripp and members Thomas DeCastro, Heather DelConte, John Dunsmoor, Michael McLaughlin and Lynda Sereno.
Also included as a non-voting member of the board is Oswego High School Student Council President Kara Weiss.
There were a few special moments recognizing the members of the board for their dedicated service.
Oswego Middle School music teacher Deb Mazurek presented several members of the OMS Strings Orchestra to perform musical compositions for the board. Student musicians included Abby Douglas, Cassie Romeo, Sheyenne Lacey, Leah Taylor, Rose Huang, Megan Lagoe, Nathan Getman, Samantha Porter, Katterina Ruotolo, Zoe Clark, James May, Leanna Restani, Luke May, Alex Emmons, Margo McBrearty and Nolan Callahan.
Technology teacher Chuck Rowlee along with several students were present to provide the board members with new nameplates.
Rowlee was joined by Mya Kinder, Alyssa Lee, Sierra Buske, Alexa Quesnell and Drake Morgia as they were some of the students involved in creating the board nameplates.
The technology teacher said, “We believe in helping others. We feel that it is a trait that is very important for all of our students to learn.”
Explaining the creations he said, “Technology Education at OMS decided on these plaques because it demonstrates all of the disciplines taught in our department; woods, engineering, and communications. Technology Education teaches its students; material processes, safety, design, problem solving and team work. These plaques showcase those areas of technology, as well as many more. “
In closing he noted, “Through this project, OMS students received an understanding of the design and manufacturing processes used in everyday life. Students in ‘Woods Technology’ perform materials processes and practice proper tool usage while using tools and equipment to cut and prepare material. Engineering Technology students work with CADD (Computer Aided Drafting and Design) and Corel Draw design software to plan and layout multiple design ideas to be cut on a laser machine till the solution is solved. Communications Technology students use design software like Adobe Illustrator and LXi Vinyl Express to plan, design, and cut vinyl decals on a highly technical vinyl cutter.”
Later in the evening the board also received glasses engraved with the Buccaneer from the Oswego High School technology team.
Serving on a local school board is volunteer in nature, but for the final week of October throughout New York State those sitting on schools boards are recognized for their dedication in celebration of “School Board Recognition Week.”
