Oswego County Celebrates New York’s First National Marine Sanctuary

OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County representatives gathered with members of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and state and regional partners to celebrate the designation of Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. The Sept. 6 ceremony was held on Cahill Pier in Oswego and featured multiple distinguished speakers as well as a community fair with visitor information, DJ music and more. The official announcement was made in June, making Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary NOAA’s 16th national marine sanctuary, and the third in the Great Lakes. Prior to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Oswego County Administrator Phil Church took to the podium to discuss the significance of the sanctuary and the many opportunities it will bring for education, research, recreation and tourism. He was supported onstage by regional partners from Oswego, Cayuga, Jefferson and Wayne counties and the City of Oswego.
