Oswego County Companies Begin Their United Way Campaigns

FULTON, NY – With the United Way of Greater Oswego County’s Annual Campaign under way, Resource Development Director, Lois Luber has been busy visiting area businesses and organizations to help them with their employee campaigns in support of the United Way.

Luber works closely with the designated employee campaign coordinator in order to make their job easier and more productive.

The support that the United Way receives from employee campaigns plays a vital role in helping the United Way reach its goals.

“These campaigns, hosted by caring companies and organizations, are the life blood of our annual campaign,” said Luber. “The donations we receive through payroll deduction provide approximately 66% of our total campaign dollars.  We appreciate the support we receive through payroll deduction and are thankful for the opportunity to visit these businesses and organizations. It’s very gratifying to know that they realize the impact that the United Way and our member agency programs have on the quality of life in Oswego County. It is an excellent example of the United Way’s Live United concept that we are all connected and that by supporting the United Way they can truly help make a difference in their community.”

For the first time ever the United Way is offering special prizes as an incentive for supporting the United Way through in-house workplace campaigns.

“The idea was suggested at the first Campaign Cabinet meeting in August as a way to increase first time pledges through payroll deduction, explained Luber. “Our Campaign Cabinet incentives for giving will be presented to Campaign Coordinators during October and November.”

Created to build new relationships and collaborations, the United Way’s Campaign Cabinet includes members Jonathan Daniels of the Port of Oswego Authority; Brian Finn of Entergy; Doug McCrae of Bond, Schoeneck & King; as well as Luber and Melanie Trexler of the United Way.

Maria Hudson of Constellation Energy serves as chairperson.

“It is an honor to serve as the 2008 campaign chair,” said Hudson. I first became involved with the UW more than seven years ago when I took a job with the UW of Central NY. Through my work I met people…. a family who lost their home to fire were given shelter…parents who could count on safe and caring environments for their children while they worked…seniors had the tools they need to maintain their independence. All these things made possible by the efforts of the United Way. It soon became clear to me that the United Way is about advancing the common good. It is a movement of people working together with a common vision who are committed to changing conditions in their community. This year the United Way has introduced the Live United concept, a community wide invitation to get involved in the work that’s happening around you and get involved. Give, advocate and volunteer…that’s what it means to Live United and that’s what the United Way stands for.”

The United Way of Greater Oswego County’s goal for the 2008/2009 campaign is $800,000.

The money raised will support the many human services programs that the United Way and its member agencies provide for those who live in Oswego County.
