Seventy-five jail administrators from across New York State recently attended an annual training conference in Saratoga Springs, NY, sponsored by the New York State Sheriffs’ Association and the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute. These conferences are conducted annually, and provide officers not only the chance to receive training, but to meet with their colleagues around the state and discuss common issues.
The Sheriffs’ Association and the Sheriffs’ Institute offer this annual training conference to help jail administrators learn about advances in correctional practices and discuss issues of mutual concern. Representatives of several State agencies, such as the New York State Commission of Correction, the Division of Criminal Justice Services, the State Department of Corrections, and the Department of Civil Service, shared their perspectives on new laws and practices with the jail administrators. The participants also had presentations on a the Sheriffs’ VINE program, which allows victims to obtain real-time information about the incarcerated status of offenders; mental health services for county jail inmates; disability benefits for correction officers; employee discipline; video court appearances; immunization practices which can promote inmate health care; delivery of medication to inmates; leadership strategies; and federal programs on identifying illegal aliens held in county jails.
The training conference is the best way for jail administrators to exchange ideas and discuss correctional practices, and the Sheriffs of New York State remain committed to provide this training to those who work so hard to keep our communities safe and secure.
The program is offered without fee to participating counties, which only cover the costs of lodging and meals for their employees.
