Oswego County Legislature Observes National Preparedness Month

BE READY FOR DISASTER DURING NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH – Observe National Preparedness Month this September by creating an emergency response plan and a disaster supplies kit. Be sure to review the plan with family members and kindly help neighbors in need. To mark the occasion, the Oswego County Legislature’s Public Safety Committee presented a proclamation to the Oswego County Emergency Management Office (EMO). OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Legislature recognized September as National Preparedness Month during its full meeting on Sept. 11.

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup, District 9, wrote in his proclamation, “I urge all government agencies, private organizations and the people and businesses of Oswego County to prepare and work together toward a safer, stronger and more resilient community.”

Following the presentation, Oswego County Emergency Management Office Director Cathleen Palmitesso made remarks about the occasion.

“While we have this great turnout of the community here, I would like to take a moment to encourage all of you to reflect on this past year and think about any challenges we might have faced during severe weather – whether it was a wind event, power outage, flood event – anything that challenged you to be prepared,” she said. “Try to prepare your family and your household for those emergencies.”

Disaster Preparedness Month is an ideal time to reflect on emergencies that can affect you and make a plan you can follow when the next emergency occurs. People should create or update disaster supplies kits, discuss how your family should communicate during an emergency and ensure you have multiple methods of receiving weather or emergency alerts.

Legislator Paul Connolly, District 20, vice chairman of the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee, read from the proclamation, “Supporting vulnerable populations – such as older adults, people with disabilities, and those at higher risk – strengthens overall community response. County departments including Emergency Management, Health, Office for the Aging, Veterans’ Services and Social Services actively collaborate to promote emergency preparedness for all residents.”

National Preparedness Month is a national campaign that encourages people to be prepared for all emergencies by creating a plan, putting together a disaster supplies kit that includes items for pets and special needs, and helping others prepare and respond.
