OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Legislature recognized its Health Department for earning national accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) during its February meeting. The Legislature’s Health Committee presented the PHAB plaque signifying the honor, which demonstrates Oswego County’s commitment to excellence in serving the community and meeting foundational needs.
“Achieving national accreditation is an impressive milestone,” said Legislator Paul House, District 8, chairman of the Legislature’s Health Committee. “This honor reflects the health department’s commitment to providing essential services to protect and promote the health of every resident in Oswego County.
“Accreditation strengthens the department by preparing our staff for emergencies and helping ensure that public health programs meet community needs,” he added. “We’re proud to recognize the health department for this significant accomplishment and commend its staff for their dedication and hard work.”
The health department first announced it had earned national accreditation last November.
“I’m incredibly proud of our dedicated team,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Vera Dunsmoor. “This achievement is a testament to their professionalism, resilience and unwavering service. Accreditation isn’t just recognition for where we are today, but it’s a promise to continue to improve and ensure a healthier future for our community.”
The Oswego County Health Department is one of 19 health departments in New York State that have earned accreditation. It is estimated that just 14% of all health departments across the country are accredited with PHAB.
“I’d like to give a special thank you to Oswego County Administrator Phil Church, our County Board of Health and the Oswego County Legislature’s Health Committee,” Dunsmoor added. “You have been through this with us since the beginning, and I thank you for supporting us throughout this process. I would also like to thank the full Legislature; this would not have been possible without you. Thank you for believing in us.”
Established in 2007, PHAB is the non-profit organization that administers the national accreditation program which aims to advance and transform public health practice by championing performance improvement, strong infrastructure and innovation.
