OSWEGO, NY – Oswego Health will continue two of its long-standing Oswego Harborfest traditions.
The healthcare system will sponsor the Oswego Harborfest Children’s Parade on July 25, and will hand out sunscreen along the parade route.
Pre-parade activities begin at 10 a.m. at West Park, with the parade beginning at 11 a.m.
Oswego Health is the parade sponsor and invites children and their families to participate.
Oswego Health has been at community events for the past 18 years handing out sunscreen.
This initiative was undertaken after Oswego Hospital emergency department employees noted that many young children were seeking treatment for sunburn during Harborfest.
Oswego Health staff members encourage residents to be mindful to frequently apply sunscreen especially during the peak sun hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Sunscreen should also be reapplied after swimming.
A sunscreen with a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15 is recommended.
Sunscreens with a SPF of 15 protect the skin from 93% of ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays.
UVB rays cause sunburn and are considered the main cause of basal and squamous cell skin cancers and a significant cause of melanoma.
An SPF of 30 means the sunscreen protects against 97% of UVB rays. Sunscreens with a SPF of 30 are recommended for sun-sensitive people, skin cancer patients, and people at high risk of developing skin cancer.
