Oswego High School Senior Gabe Cook Awarded Inaugural David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship

Oswego, NY – Oswego High School Senior Gabe Cook was recognized recently as the inaugural recipient of the David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship. Cook received a $1,000 scholarship to support his continued education in music.

“We are proud to recognize Gabe as the inaugural winner of the $1,000 annual scholarship,” said David’s wife, Jill Sterio. “Gabe’s resume and accomplishments throughout his high school career were remarkable, and we wish him the best in his college pursuits in music. Thank you to everyone who donated to the scholarship fund for this year and going forward, so we can continue to recognize an OHS music student every year and maintain David’s musical legacy in the community.”

Cook, the son of Jennifer and Michael Cook, has demonstrated exceptional musical talent and dedication throughout his high school career. He has excelled as the principal cellist in the Symphonic Orchestra and the lead alto saxophonist in the Wind Ensemble. His passion for music and commitment to education are evident in his achievements, which include learning the violin and tenor saxophone this year and leading the Concert Orchestra in the absence of the orchestra teacher.

“Music is so much a part of who I am and a true passion,” said Cook. “I have been fortunate to have music teachers who are mentors that have assisted and supported my passion for music both inside and outside the classroom. I have discovered a passion for music education as well. When our orchestra teacher is out of school, I have led the Concert Orchestra in rehearsal. In sixth grade, I was given the opportunity to hold rehearsals and conduct our sixth-grade band in a concert. These have been great experiences. In pursuing music education, I want to share with others the love of music and be like the teachers who inspired me to work hard in pursuit of this dream.”

“The David Sterio Memorial Scholarship will help me financially attend the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam as a music education major. I appreciate David’s wife, Jill and her family, for providing me with this $1,000 scholarship, and I am honored to be the inaugural winner of the award, and to be a part of David’s continued legacy,” Cook added.

David Sterio, who passed away unexpectedly last August, was a remarkable musician and advocate for the arts. As President of the Musician’s Union of Oswego County, he tirelessly enriched our musical community. His clarinet and saxophone performances with various bands captivated audiences, while his generosity extended to high school shows and church cantatas. A graduate of Ithaca College in Music Education and Performance, he continued his father’s legacy in the Nick Sterio Orchestra. His impact lives on through the annual David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship, benefiting Oswego High School seniors pursuing music careers.
