OSWEGO, NY – To recognize the dedication of its entire emergency room staff, Oswego Hospital is expanding its celebration of national emergency nurses week, which is October 7 through 13.
The theme for this year’s national week of recognition is, “Every Patient + Every Time = Making a Difference,” which reflects the dedication of emergency nurses not only at Oswego Hospital, but throughout the country.
“Oswego Hospital has a highly trained and very devoted emergency room staff,” said Steve Olson, RN, clinical nurse manager of the department. “The nurses and other staff members work here because they love the challenge of helping people through often difficult situations. No one wakes up in the morning expecting to go the emergency room. For those that do arrive at our door in need of immediate care, the staff is prepared and ready 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
Olson added, “Regardless of the injury, the ER staff is resilient and work through whatever the circumstances may be with a smile on their face.”
Oswego Hospital’s emergency room employs approximately 40 registered nurses with another ten staff members serving in support roles.
Board-certified physicians treat those that arrive at the department with the assistance of nurse practitioners during peak hours.
Oswego Hospital recently unveiled a new ER that features 17 patient rooms, many of which are private and have their own televisions.
The department is equipped with a state-of-the-art central cardiac monitoring system and two trauma bays that feature advanced technology.
Since 1989, the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) has celebrated the second Wednesday in October as Emergency Nurses Day, a day set aside to honor emergency nurses for their commitment to patient care.
Starting in 2001, ENA expanded the celebration to devote an entire week to honoring emergency nurses, because one day is simply not enough to recognize all contributions made by emergency nurses.
