Oswego Hospital Maternity Center Has New Infant Hearing Test System

OSWEGO, NY – Infants born at Oswego Hospital will have their hearing checked using some of the latest technology.

The hospital has recently purchased a new sophisticated computer that screens every baby’s hearing ability that is born at the facility.

Each year, more than 650 babies are born at Oswego Hospital.

This updated technology produces clicking sounds that are transmitted into a baby’s ear through a tiny microphone.

The computer records the reaction of these clicking sounds through the baby’s hair fibers in the ear canal.

“While we rarely encounter a newborn with audiology problems, this new technology assures parents that their baby’s hearing is perfectly normal,” said Lori Greeney, RN., clinical manager of the maternity center. “It’s just one of screenings we do on our newborns before they go home.”
