OSWEGO – Recently the Officers of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps Truxtun DDG-103 division, based out of Oswego, took 21 cadets to visit the Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia.
The cadets spent four days on base and experienced firsthand what base life is like.
While in Norfolk, the cadets were graciously allowed to tour the active duty destroyer ship that is their namesake, the USS Truxtun DDG-103.
The USS Truxtun happened to be in port and the crew made accommodations to allow all 21 cadets and eight officers a tour of the ship and set up a meet and greet with the captain.
The captain shook hands of each cadet and presented them each their own Truxtun challenge coin.
Through the remainder of their stay cadets also toured: Arlington National Cemetery, Witnessed the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, Toured the USS Wisconsin, the Nauticus Museum, MacArthur Memorial and spent their last day on Dam Neck Beach at Oceana Naval Base.
The cadets worked hard to fundraise for this trip; and with great leadership of their commanding officer LTJG Andy Roth, he and his officers were able to help make this trip happen.
The USNSCC Truxtun DDG-103 division will host an open house for new potential recruits to join its unit on June 11 at 09:00 at the McCrobie Building, 41 Lake St., Oswego.

What an awesome bunch of cadets. They learn discipline, honor, courage and commitment, and how to become an upstanding citizen.
I am so pleased that my grandson Cort Collins is a part of this unit. He makes me so proud and I can’t believe that he will be in the US Navy next year after he graduates from high school. Thank you to all the leaders and parents that made this trip possible.
