OSWEGO, NY – Terry Hammill presented a program “The New Ancestry†to the Oswego Sunrise Rotary recently.
He described how DNA is used in population studies, evolution, and population movement.
Doctor Hammill told the Rotarians that we receive half of our DNA from our mothers and half from our fathers.
Ninety-five percent of modern Europeans are descended from only seven so-called clan mothers who lived between 8,500 and 45,000 years ago.
They have been named Xena, Helena, Velda, Tara, Katrine, Jasmine and Ulrike.
All of these women can be traced back to a woman who lived in Africa about 150,000 to 200,000 years ago called Mitochondria Eve.
There are also 18 clan fathers that can be traced back a man called Y Chromosomal Adam.
