Pageant Of Champions Brings Top Bands to Oswego

OSWEGO, NY – A standing-room-only crowd is expected to witness the annual Oswego “Pageant of Champions” is Saturday evening at Joe Wilber Stadium in Oswego.

The 32nd annual “Pageant of Champions” will begin at 5:30 p.m. with Auburn starting off the night.

Following the Maroons will be Phoenix, East Irondequoit, Norwich, Jordan-Elbridge, East Syracuse-Minoa, West Genesee, Webster, Cicero-North Syracuse, Liverpool, Victor, and Central Square.

Completing the evening will be the exhibition by the host Oswego High School Marching Buccaneers at 8:30 p.m.

The highlight of the evening for the local music fans will be the appearance of “The Pride of Oswego” the Oswego High School Marching Buccaneers.

The band will be led on to the field by senior drum major Jacqueline Hondro to present “The Proper Ornaments of Life.”

This year’s show, according to Band Director Stephen Defren, “Explores what is truly important in life and what really makes us happy!”

Music for the 2010 edition of the Marching Bucs is from a band with New York State roots called “The Free Design” from Western New York. The 91 members of the Marching Bucs perform to “The Music Room,” “Umbrellas,” “The Proper Ornaments” and “Kites Are Fun.”

Last Saturday night the Marching Bucs put on another outstanding performance, but were scored at 72.5 for fifth place at the Cicero-North Syracuse New York State Field Band Conference event.

Victor captured first place in the National Division with an 83.2 followed by West Genesee (82.4), Liverpool (78.95) and Central Square (77.65).

Also in competition were Small School 1 bands East Syracuse-Minoa with a first place score of 74.05 followed by East Irondequoit (72.85). In Small School 2 the winning band was Mohonasen with a 71.3 and second was Phoenix (66.1). Auburn earned a score of 67.6 and was the only Large School 3 band in that category.

For the Marching Bucs this Saturday will be exciting and it will be the final performance for Oswego’s seniors in this show.

Following this week the band will return for regular NYSBFC competition, but on Oct. 23 the Marching Bucs will travel to the Bands of America Regional Championship at Towson University in Maryland before winding down the season the following week at the Syracuse Carrier Dome for the New York State Championship competition.
