Pedals, Pipes, and Pizza, will be from 11am – Noon, Saturday, November 15th followed with pizza, at the First United Methodist Church of Mexico on Route 69.  Featuring organ music performed by American Guild of Organists member Abel Searor; organist, Carolyn Hiler; and a debut by Elliot Ringwald. Three years ago Carolyn Hiler wanted to start a program that would introduce the pipe organ as the great musical instrument it is to young people. With grants from the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, she was able to provide Pedals, Pipes, and Pizza l and ll to the community at no charge. With private donations and funding from the outreach program Art-For-Me of the Art Association of Oswego, Pedals, Pipes, and Pizza will again be free and open to the public. Art-For-Me is funded in part by the Community Arts Grant Program of the Cultural Resources Council of Syracuse and Onondaga County, funded by New York State Council on the Arts.
Carolyn Hiler and Abel Searor will introduce Elliot Ringwald. Elliot, a freshman at the Mexico High School, is best known in the area for his trombone and piano playing. In the past year he has been studying the pipe organ under the instruction of Abel Searor. Elliot’s debut on the pipe organ should delight and impress both young and old.
The organ at the First United Methodist Church is 129 years old and still has some of the original pipes installed by organ maker Mr. Steere. Around the mid-1900s a New York pipe organ specialist Carl F. Rademaker did some restoration and added pipes. The organ’s air supply no longer comes from large bellows that had to be pumped by strong people, now it is a hugh chest of air that is operated electrically. The quality of sound for a pipe organ is very dependent on the room it is designed for and built into. Come listen for yourself.
The concert will be followed with pizza and apple cider.  Also after the concert, people may go up to the organ’s console and ask questions and hear demonstrations of the many “voices†of the pipe organ.  For more information phone the church at 963-3066.
