Students at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School recently took a step back in time to discover what the Phoenix community was like hundreds of years ago during the 29th annual Canal Days.
Phoenix fourth graders gathered next to the Oswego River to receive a lesson in Phoenix history.
Hundreds of students, teachers, chaperones and community members walked throughout Canal Park where they were greeted by local historians who provided plenty of education on 19th century living.
Each historian was historically-clothed and provided information about the lifestyles, trades and crafts of the 1800s and early 1900s.
Students experienced a bevy of cultural treads from yesteryear, including how to create a horseshoe or how to prepare food without electricity.
Students also had the opportunity to tour Tug Syracuse, one of the New York States Canal Corp.’s heavy-duty tugboats.
