Dear Porky and Buddy,
I was horrified to see that the Oswego County Humane Society just featured Pearl, an adorable black kitten, as Pet of the Week – just a few days before Halloween!
Don’t they know that black cats are used in Satanic rituals on Halloween? ALL responsible animal welfare organizations suspend black cat adoptions for the month of October.
What were they thinking?
Jane
Dear Jane,
There is in fact an old rumor that adopting black cats around Halloween is dangerous because there are evil people who use them for evil purposes.
You see dire warnings about it all the time.
So, we guess they were thinking, “Let’s do our research and see if there is any truth to what people say about black cats and Halloween.”
And they found that no less a “responsible” animal welfare organization than Best Friends Animal Society said, “No, it’s an unfounded rumor.”
The fact is there is no actual evidence that adopting black cats around Halloween poses any greater risk to the pets than adopting them at any other time of the year.
This is not to say that people don’t do cruel things to all animals at all times of the year and they should be prosecuted and punished.
It’s also not to say that responsible animal welfare organizations shouldn’t follow careful adoption screening procedures for all animals at all times of the year.
That is just common sense.
But the other common sense reality is that animals die because they have no homes, and to lessen their chance of finding a home based on superstition is NOT common sense.
So check out Pearl.
She is adorable.
