Dear readers,
As you know, this column usually dispenses advice about pet-related issues.
We love getting real questions from real readers, but the truth is you are REALLY BAD at that. So, most of the time we make up pretend questions about topics we think are important.
We are perfectly happy to continue to do that, but remember that we are ecstatically happy to answer real questions.
That said, we also like to use this column as a sort of soap box to encourage you to take action to help all animals and this feels like a soap box morning.
There are several national websites that we rely on to provide up to date information about pending national and state legislative and regulatory efforts where our voices are needed.
They are the Humane Society of the United States, www.hsus.org/action/, the National Anti-Vivisection Society, http://www.navs.org, and the ASPCA, www.aspca.org/fight-cruelty/advocacy-center/.
Go to any one or all of these sites to sign up for email alerts about what needs to be done.
On these sites there are online petitions and email services that you can use to quickly and easily make your voice heard and you should feel free to do that about legislation that you think is important.
These organization sponsored calls to action are important and effective.
But here is the thing to remember – the most effective thing you can do, the way to really be heard, is to jot down the bill number and the name of the bill and then make a telephone call to your own legislator.
You don’t have to discuss the pros and cons of the bill, not at all.
You are not a lobbyist. You are a constituent and that is way more important.
Just tell whoever answers the phone that you would like to speak to a staff person about that specific bill and tell that staff person who you are and that you want her or his boss to support that legislation.
Simple, direct, powerful.
