Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Make Oswego County A Better Place For All Animals.

Porky and Buddy

Dear Readers,
You may have read the recent Pet of the Week column about Jack In The Box or maybe you saw it on Facebook or received an email from the Oswego County Humane Society.

They told you about Jack, the cat taped up in a box and left by the side of the road on a frigid December day.

Jack In The BoxJack In The Box

Luckily, he was rescued by some kind-hearted strangers who took him for vet care and he is fine now at the Humane Society and hoping to find a new safe home.

But we have been thinking about Jack ever since then and the level of cruelty that he was exposed to.

If you want to abandon a cat, why not just put him outside somewhere that he might at least have a chance of survival?

It would still constitute the crime of abandonment, but why tape this very nice, well-behaved, playful cat inside a box?

We don’t understand it.

What we do understand is that people make foolish, wrong-headed decisions about unwanted pets; decisions that are certainly negligent, but not necessarily as “cruel” as Jack’s case, because they just don’t know about better options.

So, for the coming year we are dedicating this column to making 2018 the Year of Kindness.

We are going to harp, nag, cajole, beg for people to find out and use their options for caring for their pets kindly.

The first line of defense of course is the Oswego County Humane Society and the other fine animal welfare organizations in our county and nearby.

But even working together they cannot begin to deal effectively with all the animals needing homes.

So next week we will start with what the Oswego County Humane Society can do to help when its foster homes are full but a pet still needs a new home.

And then we’ll go on from there.

Send us your questions and comments.

Together, we can make Oswego County a better place for all animals.

There may be no hope (or forgiveness) for whoever put Jack in that box, but there is hope for the rest of us.

Please join us.
