Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Please Help Support Animal Welfare

Porky and Buddy

Dear readers,
It’s that time of year again. The New York State Legislature goes back into session this week and you need to be ready to contact your state legislators about legislation that will be introduced concerning animal welfare.

What’s the best way to do that? At the Oswego County Humane Society we receive action alerts and pass them on to you in this column, with emails, and on our Facebook page.

But the best way to make sure you know what is going on and what to do about it is to sign up for action alerts that come out from several of the national organizations.

They include HSUS at www.humanesociety.org/action/, the ASPCA at www.aspca.org/take-action/advocacy-center, and the American Anti-Vivisection Society.

It sends out a weekly newsletter through the Animal Law Resource Center and you can sign up at www.aavs.org/take-action/

Remember too that while many of these action alerts allow you to use an online email system to make your vice heard easily, if you want it heard loudly, your best course of action is to take the information from the alert and call your legislator’s office directly.

You may not be able to speak directly to the legislator, but ask for the staff person in charge of that bill and tell her or him who you are and what your position is.

Personal phone calls from constituents are always important even if (or maybe especially if) your legislator disagrees.

It doesn’t matter what your political persuasion is.

All of the important New York legislation on animal welfare in recent years has passed because of carefully crafted bi-partisan support.

So speak up on behalf of those who can’t.
