Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Real Dogs Eat Quiche, But …

Porky and Buddy

Dear Porky and Buddy,
I had a neighbor at my house the other day for lunch and I went to feed my dog, Herbie, some of the leftover quiche, (because he’s a real man and he loves quiche).

My neighbor freaked out and started yelling at me about the onions in the quiche and how they could kill Herbie.

I never heard of such a thing.

Is she right?

Herbie seemed fine.

Is she just a know-it-all busybody?

John

Dear John,
We have no idea whether your neighbor is a know-it-all busybody, but that is beside the point as far as we are concerned.

First of all, whenever you have the slightest suspicion that your pet may have injected something harmful, your first step should be to call your vet to check it out.

Or if you can’t reach your vet or an emergency vet you can call the ASPCA poison control line at 888-426-4435.

There is a fee for this service but it may save a life.

You need to be able to tell your vet what Herbie ate and how much, and also his weight and breed.

Here’s what our friends at the ASPCA have to say: “Onions, garlic, and chives can cause gastrointestinal irritation and could lead to red blood cell damage. Although cats are more susceptible, dogs are also at risk if a large enough amount is consumed.”

There are no clear guidelines on how much, if any, of these vegetables can be consumed safely.

But, there is some research that indicates that consuming a huge quantity of onion once is actually less dangerous than many small doses over a period of time, such as those found in quiche.

We don’t recommend feeding your pets table scraps as a general rule any way, but we know all too well that most of our readers do it.

So if you are going to, you are well advised to check for things like onions, garlic or onion or garlic powder in these human concoctions and rule those out.

Herbie will be just as happy with plainer food and you won’t have to worry.
