OSWEGO — Port City Roller Derby hopes the league’s Jan. 16 Open House and Recruitment event can help with at least a few new year’s resolutions.
“Many people resolve to get in better shape, lose weight or get on a fitness plan,” said Jayda Calhoun, also known as Jaded Glory, chair of PCRD’s training committee. “We offer a way to get in shape and have a lot of fun at the same time.”
The open house, which will run about an hour starting at 8 p.m. Jan. 16, at the Oswego YMCA Armory on West First Street, will offer information on the sport and its benefits, demonstrations of how to play derby and details on the many different roles the non-profit community organization provides.
“Our competitive teams are for women, but we welcome men as well because we always need referees, non-skating officials and other talented volunteers,” said membership chair Vanessa Vickery, aka Murmaider. “If your resolutions include meeting new people or trying new things, roller derby is one big family that welcomes women and men from every walk of life.”
The recruitment is for the adult league, entering its fourth season, with skating positions available for women 18 years of age or older.
“If you’ve never skated before, that’s totally cool,” Calhoun said. “Some of our best skaters never strapped on a pair of skates before they started roller derby. We provide all the training, and we proceed at whatever pace the skater finds comfortable.”
