Port of Oswego Authority Board Appoints Scriber To New Manager of Administrative Services Position

OSWEGO, New York – The Port of Oswego Authority Board of Directors has announced the appointment of William W. Scriber to the new position of Manager of Administrative Services.

The new role will include a variety of administrative duties as they relate to the day-to-day Port functions including: IT management, grant research/applications and compliance, as well as insurance claims.  Scriber will begin his duties at the Port of Oswego on January 4, 2010.

According to Dr. Terrence Hammill, the Port of Oswego Authority Board Chairman, the appointment represents increased administrative needs as a result of the significant growth and expansion the Port has seen under the direction of their executive director Jonathan Daniels.

“The Port of Oswego has been experiencing a new and exciting dynamism under the extraordinary leadership of Executive Director, Jonathan Daniels,” said Hammill.  “Business opportunities have broadened and expanded in several directions.”

“A new mission statement for the Port was recently approved at our October 26th board meeting that positions this Port as an ‘international transportation and commerce center of excellence’,” he added. “ It has become increasingly clear that additional administrative expertise would facilitate the Port’s growth and development, and help it meet its stated mission.”

According to Hammill, the appointment will bring the managerial level to three persons, including the Executive Director, and two subordinate positions, Manager of Port Operations, and Manager of Administrative Services.

Scriber has been the Oswego County Commissioner of Elections for over a decade.  Prior to that time he was Regional Operations Manager of Air Express International and Voltainer Ocean Services.  He also has experience in warehouse and container shipment operations, and has served as the Town of Parish Supervisor, and as a School Board Member and President of the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown School District.

Hammill also noted that Scriber’s US Army Airborne and Special Operations Command experience, his special training in security measures, combined with his facility to manage computer operations, will greatly benefit the administration of the Port of Oswego.
“The Board of Directors is striving to advance the Port of Oswego’s mission,” said Hammill. “In Jonathan Daniels, we have the right Executive Director, and we want to assist him in every way possible with an experienced and capable management staff.  Bill Scriber will be an asset to our Executive Director, his management team, our Port and our way forward.”

The Port of Oswego is the first U.S. Port and first deepwater port on the Great Lakes from the St. Lawrence Seaway and is accessible from virtually any international port in the world. The port was officially commissioned in 1955 but has been a major driver in local and national commerce since the 1800s.

The Port is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to accommodate vessels from all ports on the Great Lakes and around the world. The Port entrance depth is 27 feet, a width of 750 feet, a turning basin of 115 acres, and it has no restrictions on beam length for ships entering the harbor. A U.S. Customs Service office is maintained on site to facilitate the movement of legitimate international cargo by rail, truck and water.
