To start off the column this week I would like to initiate something new.
It would be nice to hear from you, the reader, and your thoughts on what you would like to read in this column, what you like about it and what you would change.

Main Street Business News
If you have been wondering what has been going on at 2969 Main Street (next to the gazebo) it is Amy O’Hara, owner of Just Teasin Hair Salon, relocating there.
She will be open for business October 1with a grand reopening on October 6.
She was previously located at 2944 East Main Street. Amy has high hopes for her new salon and welcomes her old customers and new ones. She can reached at 625-7131.

Happenings
There is a photo contest going on in the town of Parish, it is a chance for the photographer in each of you to step forward and participate.
We have been doing this contest for the past four years and we have had some pretty amazing winners.
So join in the fun and get out there in our beautiful town and take some photos of the abundant animal wildlife.
Photo entry deadline is November 23 (this is a change of the deadline date). Winners will be announced December 1 at the Holiday Celebration at the Mills and Petrie Gymnasium.
A reminder from Daniel Dalin, president of the Greater Parish Area Chamber of Commerce, about the fifth annual Focus on Parish Photo Contest.
The Theme this year is “Animal Wildlife.”
Parish is a natural wildlife treasure.
With hundreds of acres of countryside, cool forests and miles of pristine rivers, streams and ponds, it provides a natural habitat for its vast array of wild life.
To promote the value of this pristine area, The Greater Parish Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its photography contest.
Amateur photographers, young and old, who reside in the town of Parish are eligible and encouraged to participate.
Pictures of wildlife animals in the changing seasons of Parish are encouraged. The entries must be taken within the Parish area in the 2011/2012 timeframe.
There will be four cash prizes awarded: first prize: $100, second prize: $75, third prize: $50 and fourth prize: $25.
Entry blank and rules are found on the Greater Parish Area Chamber of Commerce.
November 23 is the deadline for turning in the photo entries into the Mills and Petrie Memorial Gymnasium.
The winning photographs will used by the chamber to promote tourism in Parish.

A Very Special Day
On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus’ expedition makes landfall in the Caribbean, specifically in the Bahamas. On the same date in1892 – Pledge of Allegiance first recited in public schools; 1916 – Boston Red Sox beat Brooklyn Dodgers, 4 games to 1 in 13th World Series; in 1960 – Nikita Khrushchev pounds his shoe at UN General Assembly session; and on October 12, 2012, Parish’s own Fred and Bridget Swartz will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
The Swartz children sent me the following information:
Fred and Bridget were married in Newark, NY, on Columbus Day, Friday, October 12, 1962, at St. Michael’s Church. Fred’s brother, Tom, was the best man. Bridget’s college roommate, Patricia Trionfera, was the maid of honor.
Their reception was held at The Old World Inn in Newark.
They honeymooned in the Finger Lakes.
Fred and Bridget met while teaching together at Lake Shore Road Elementary School in North Syracuse. They moved to Parish in 1963 – they (especially Fred) loved Parish at first sight.
Fred and Bridget made a loving and happy home for their five children and have enjoyed being active in their community.
So if you see Fred or Bridget in the next few days you might want to congratulate them.
The family gathered at local restaurant in Rochester to honor their parents Sunday September 23.
Lets Dance!
This year, the Mexico and Parish Dining and Activities Centers combined together for the annual Candlelight Dinner entitled “Lets Dance!” at the Parish Fire Station on September 24.
There were about 80 people in attendance. The social hour began at 3 p.m. and at 4 p.m. the Town Tappers, a troupe of lovely senior lady tap dancers, ranging in age from 66 to 83 years old, took the floor and provided exciting dancing entertainment.
Theresa Darling also wowed the crowd when she took on the character of Patsy Kline.
Gloria White received special recognition for being the eldest attendee at 93.
A delicious dinner was served of chicken cordon bleu, baked potato, salad, soup, cherry cheesecake for dessert.
Everyone left the annual event saying what a nice time they had.
Mary Lou Guindon and Linda McNamara wish to thank all those that attended and the volunteers that helped make the even the success that it was.
Upcoming Events
The United Methodist Women reports the following upcoming events:
October 20 – 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. – bake sale/bazaar/luncheon (starts at 11:30 a.m.)
The bake sale brings out the best bakers in the community, you have to get there early or you miss out.
Regular meeting of UMW will be held on November 12 at noon (BYO lunch)
The United Methodist Church annual chicken n’ biscuit dinner will be on December 1. This is a favorite event for the Community. The atmosphere is friendly and the food is the very best, a great family event. What better way to start the Christmas season. Make sure you put the date on your calendar.
For the most part the money raised by these events is used in fulfilling the needs of groups and individuals of the Parish Community.
The Greater Parish Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that this year’s Holiday Celebration will begin on December 1.
We will be illuminating the Christmas tree located in Veterans’ Park in Parish, at the Y-intersection of State Route 69 and Church Street.
Please join us at 6 p.m. on December 1 to sing some Christmas carols and to light the tree!
Immediately following, we will move indoors (Mills & Petrie Memorial Gymnasium) to continue our celebration.
There will be a raffle, storytelling, cookie decorating and local vendors available to sell their goods.
The 2012 Photo Contest winners will be announced.
We may even be visited by Santa Claus!

Every day, thousands of babies are born too soon, too small and often very sick.
On October 14, 10 a.m. at Onondaga Community College, we’re walking in March for Babies because we want to do something about this.
And we need your help.
Bailey Dalin was born on March 19, 2004, at 26 weeks gestation: three months early.
Thanks to the research funded by the March of Dimes prior to his birth, Bailey is now a healthy and vibrant 8 1/2 year old boy!
