SYRACUSE, NY – The Salvation Army of Oswego County and the Price Chopper stores in Oswego and Fulton are partnering to help children start the school year prepared to succeed.
Each Price Chopper store will have an in-store display to encourage shoppers to purchase school items while shopping in the store.
All the school supplies collected will be donated to the local Salvation Army who will provide the supplies to area students.
The campaign runs until to September 13.
This is the sixth year that Price Chopper stores are partnering with The Salvation Army to help children gear up for the academic year.
“Learning and going back to school should be a time of excitement and fun for all kids, but sadly it’s not. For some children, heading back to school is an embarrassing reminder that their families can’t afford basic school supplies due to already-tight budgets,” said Major James Purvis.
“For six years, Price Chopper and the Salvation Army have partnered on the Tools for Schools program so that the generosity of Price Chopper’s teammates, families, friends and neighbors can be leveraged to make an even greater impact on local schools and students,” said Mona Golub, Price Chopper’s vice president of public relations and consumer services. “In these difficult economic times, it is important that we work together to make a difference for every student in every school. Price Chopper is proud to play such an integral part in that effort in our communities.”
According to a study recently released by the National Retail Federation on the cost of school supplies, families with children in kindergarten through 12th grade spend an average of $688 per child. This amount averages $85 more than the amount spent last year.
Because this cost is a struggle for low-income families, The Salvation Army wants to help ensure each child is equipped with the supplies needed to do well academically.
