OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Trauma Informed Collaborative (OCTIC) offers a free screening of the documentary “Resilience” followed by a presentation of “A Review of Oswego County Social Determinates of Health Data” to celebrate World Mental Health Day on Thursday, Oct. 10. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center, 26 E. First St., Oswego.
“This event provides a judgement-free space to highlight the lifelong impacts of childhood trauma and how it can follow anyone well into adulthood,” said Oswego County Deputy Director of Public Health Jodi Martin, first chair of OCTIC. “It gives the community an opportunity to become informed and learn how they can become more involved in helping build resilience in our county.”
Originally released in 2016, “Resilience” is an engrossing study of how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can be linked to destructive behavior and medical diseases. It also details the growing movement to treat and prevent toxic stress.
Participants can enjoy a light breakfast for free, courtesy of the event sponsor, Health Foundation for Western and Central New York.
After the film, Roseann Bayne will present data that highlights Oswego County social determinants of health.
“Social determinants of health are non-medical factors that affect health outcomes,” said Bayne. “Where you are born, grow up, work, live and grow old all affect your health. Having a lack of access to or a lack of quality resources in our community can add to or worsen trauma.”
Bayne is the assistant superintendent of CiTi BOCES, where she provides training and support to all nine school districts in Oswego County and throughout New York State. One of Bayne’s goals as an administrator is to research the impact of poverty on brain development and develop strategies that could be used to level the playing field for students growing up in poverty.
Participants will have a chance to ask Bayne questions directly after her presentation and to register for upcoming training opportunities with OCTIC.
