The village of Pulaski edged out the town of Richland in Oswego County’s 27th annual best-tasting drinking water contest, held June 14 at the Oswego County Regional Market in New Haven.
The two municipalities have a longstanding rivalry in the informal contest, which is conducted annually by the Environmental Division of the Oswego County Health Department.
Visitors were invited to taste samples of public drinking water and vote for their first and second choices.
88 people participated.
Voters chose the village of Pulaski for first place with 72 points; town of Richland, second, 66 points; village of Cleveland, third, 48 points; city of Oswego, fourth, 41 points; and village of Mexico, fifth, 35 points.
Natalie Roy, principal public health sanitarian with the Oswego County Health Department, thanked the communities and visitors who participated in the contest.
“The goal of the Tap Water Taste Contest is to raise public awareness of the value and quality of public tap water through a fun and non-scientific contest,” said Roy. “Community water systems are essential to our quality of life and it’s nice to recognize the providers for their ongoing efforts to provide safe and clean drinking water to our county residents.”
Pulaski’s water will be entered in a regional competition.
Regional finalists from around the state will compete at the New York State Fair for the state’s best-tasting drinking water.
The Tap Water Taste Contest has been held in New York State since 1986 and is organized statewide by the Water and Wastewater Education and Outreach Committee.
