PULASKI – Though the 2017-18 school year doesn’t officially start until September, that hasn’t stop students from Lura M. Sharp Elementary School from flying through pages at the school’s summer reading program.

The program provides individualized learning to students with varying levels of reading gaps.
The program features approximately 40 students from kindergarten to fifth grade, and seeks to prepare each student for the upcoming school year.
According to reading teacher Machell Jones, the program provides assistance in several ELA-related areas, including phonics and vocabulary.
The program also spends time teaching the importance of proper reading speed.
“Students sometimes like to read at a fast pace, but they need to read at their own pace,” said Jones. “When you read too fast, you sometimes can’t understand what you’re reading. So we want them to read at a speed they can understand. It’s all about enjoying it.”
The program, which meets Monday through Wednesday from 8 to 11 a.m., also provides math assistance to students in need.
