Surrounded by a sea of red shirts, singer, songwriter and entertainer, Red Grammer, stopped by Fairgrieve Elementary School recently for a series of live performances. “Red Day†focuses on character, caring and community and included high-energy performances consisting of three informal sessions, a school concert, and an evening family concert.
Listening to songs from Red’s hit CDs, Hello World, Bebop Your Best, and Teaching Peace, Fairgrieve Elementary School students learn respect, kindness, gratitude, appreciation, and responsibility in an infectious and fun-loving way. During the informal sessions in the morning, Red met with smaller groups of students giving them an opportunity to ask him questions and sing with him one of his songs that they learned in Nancy Pooley’s music class.
Red discussed his own personal journey and what lead him to pursue a career in music and entertainment. Prompted by a question from second-grader Justin Hatch asking what his inspiration was, Red said, “When you are born, inside of you is a collection of potential gifts. My gift is music.†He encouraged the students to pay attention to what excites them in life, find out what their special gifts are and allow these gifts to grow and flourish. Reminding the students that determination, courage and hard work is what is needed to be good at something they love, Red said, “If you want to learn something new it’s going to be hard at first, but it gets easier.â€ÂÂ
Following the informal sessions, Red Grammer performed a school-wide performance for all students and staff from Kindergarten through 6th grade and an evening performance for all students and their family members. The magic of Red’s message infected parents as they saw their children come alive, singing and signing along with his songs and joining him on the stage for portions of the performance.
