Sandy Creek Takes Second In Mock Trial Regionals

Sandy Creek students came in second place at the Mock Trial Regional competition this year out of eight teams, losing only by one point.

The team took first place in the county competition allowing them to continue on to regionals at Morrisville Community College.

“It’s the farthest we’ve ever come in Mock Trial,” said adviser to the team, Ashley Haskins.

Mock Trial is conducted as an actual trial; there are opening statements, the plaintiff witnesses are called, then the defense witnesses testify and lastly, closing statements are made.

Attorneys prepare questions for the witnesses and anticipate objections to both of their lines of questioning as well as the opposing counsel’s.

“The witnesses must memorize their character’s statement, and be prepared for questioning that will cast doubt on their credibility,” said Haskins. “Both attorneys and witnesses work together to tell the story of the side they are advocating for.

New York State allows for all high school students to be a part of Mock Trial, and if there is more interest than positions on the team, try-outs are held.

The experience is eye-opening for all students whether they are interested in pursuing law as a career or not.

“Mock Trial has given me a deeper understanding and respect for our nation’s intricate legal system,” said Sandy Creek student Maggie King. “It has increased my confidence in public speaking and taught me how to communicate my rights and beliefs in a professional manner.”
