Second grade students at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Elementary School had a special guest reader in their classrooms to celebrate Agriculture Literacy Week, March 18-22.
Nikki Parkhurst, a volunteer from Cornell Cooperative Extension, read “The Beeman” by Laurie Krebs, where students learned all about bees and the production and processing of honey.
The book talked about the science of bees including their life cycle, and about the social system of bees like living in colonies and the duties of the queen, drones, and worker bees.
She also explained the importance of bees in other areas of agriculture such as their role in pollinating fruits, vegetable and nuts.
Parkhurst is pictured with a special treat of “honey sticks” she brought for each student to take home and have a sample of the delicious product of bees: honey.
The book read by Parkhurst was donated to the APW Elementary School Library by the Cornell Cooperative Extension.
