OSWEGO COUNTY – Volunteers are needed to assist a special project occurring at the SUNY Oswego Rice Creek Field Station. The purpose of this project is to determine if biocontrol species that have been deployed at the site to naturally suppress populations of the invasive emerald ash borers have become established.
Anyone 18 or over can participate in one or more surveys. No experience is needed, however students at SUNY Oswego majoring in biological sciences are highly encouraged to participate. Volunteers will join surveys held each week on Wednesdays, at 10 AM, from June 5th through September 25th. During the surveys specimens will be collected from pan traps that are set up along some of the trails at the Field Station. Specimens collected from the traps will be examined through microscopes at the Field Station and sent to a lab for confirmation. Identification keys, and guidance will be provided during each survey by the SLELO PRISM Terrestrial Restoration and Resilience Coordinator, Robert Smith, and a recorded training is available.
Those interested in volunteering for this project should sign up on our website at, sleloinvasives.org/event/volunteer-to-assist-biocontrol-monitoring-project/ or call 315-522-1258. The opportunity is also posted on the SLELO PRISM Facebook page.
This project is hosted by the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM) in collaboration with the SUNY Oswego Rice Creek Field Station.
