Spring Concert Highlights Students’ Musical Talents

Hannibal Senior High Band and Chorus celebrated Music In Our Schools Month March 18 with a concert in the auditorium.

Under the direction of Shirley Terrinoni, the Senior Jazz Band performed three numbers.

“Crazy Rhythm” featured soloists Zane Pointon (drum set) and Elyssa Terry-DeRycke (bass guitar). “Spain” featured soloist Amanda Kimball (tenor saxophone) with accompaniment by Natasha Waloven on piano.

The Senior Pop Chorus, under the direction of Abel Searor, sang two recent hits, “Gone, Gone, Gone” by recording artist Phillip Phillips and “Let Her Go” written and recorded by British singer-songwriter Passenger. Ninth grade student Nate Wood sang the lead male solo during “Let Her Go.”

The Senior Pop Chorus meets afterschool every other day, and students make up the arrangements themselves.

The Senior High Band performed “Prelude and Fugue in B flat Major,” “Purgatorio” from The Divine Comedy, “Sun Dance,” and finished with light hearted songs “Alice in Wonderland,” and “Power Punk.”

In addition to their musical instruments, students used their bodies for sound in “Purgatorio.” In “Sun Dance,” members of the band passed the melody around, a skill that is all about timing.

The Senior High Chorus sang a medley from the long-running musical Les Misérables.

Several members of the chorus stepped forward to sing a solo.

The evening concluded with the chorus and band doing a combined number of “When You Believe” from The Prince of Egypt.
