STEM Instruments Use Recycled Materials

PARISH – For the month of March, students in third grade classes at Altmar-Parish-Williamtown Elementary School were challenged to create a musical instrument using only throwaway materials during their Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Family project.

What they created was beyond their teachers’ wildest dreams.

Everything from xylophones to working bagpipes made from a balloon and some straws created an eclectic musical band that actually created music.

Each month, the students are challenged with a different STEM-based at-home project they can work on with family members using only recycled materials to create the specific task.

The students enjoyed the project and especially liked demonstrating how the instrument worked.

In addition to tasking students to think creatively, design, engineer and problem solve, they also present their project in front of their fellow classmates, working on public speaking and communication.
